      FAQs

What is the difference between screed and concrete?

Concrete is used for structural elements such as foundations and slabs, while screed is used as a finishing layer on top of concrete. Screed is finer and smoother, allowing it to create a level surface suitable for final floor coverings. It is not generally used for load-bearing structural purposes. Understanding this difference helps ensure the right material is used at each stage of a project.

What is ready mixed floor screed?

Ready mixed floor screed is a cement-based material used to create a smooth, level surface over a concrete sub-base. It is typically applied as a finishing layer before flooring such as tiles, carpet or wood is installed. Delivered ready mixed to site, it ensures consistent quality and saves time compared to mixing on site. Screed is an essential part of achieving a flat, durable floor finish.

What is floor screed used for?

Floor screed is used to level and smooth floors before the final floor finish is applied. It is commonly used in residential, commercial and industrial buildings for applications such as new builds, extensions and renovations. Screed can also be used with underfloor heating systems to provide an even surface and improve heat distribution. Its primary role is to create a high-quality, level base.

How thick should floor screed be?

The thickness of floor screed depends on the application and the type of screed being used. Typical screed depths range from around 50mm to 75mm for standard applications, although this can vary depending on factors such as load requirements and whether underfloor heating is installed. L&S Concrete can advise on the appropriate thickness for your specific project.

How long does floor screed take to dry?

Drying time depends on the type of screed, thickness and site conditions. As a general guide, traditional screed dries at approximately 1mm per day up to a certain thickness, although this can vary. It's important to allow sufficient drying time before installing floor finishes to avoid issues later on. L&S Concrete can provide guidance based on your screed type and project timeline.

      Can floor screed be pumped?

Yes, floor screed can be pumped, which is often the most efficient way to place it. Pumping allows screed to be delivered quickly and accurately to the required location, even in areas with restricted access. This reduces labour and helps achieve a consistent finish. L&S Concrete can supply and pump screed as part of a coordinated service.

Is ready mixed screed better than mixing on site?

Ready mixed screed offers greater consistency and quality compared to mixing on site. Because it is produced under controlled conditions, the mix is more uniform, which helps achieve a better finish. It also saves time and reduces labour on site. For many projects, ready mixed screed is the more reliable and efficient option.

Can screed be used with underfloor heating?

Yes, screed is commonly used with underfloor heating systems. It helps to evenly distribute heat across the floor and provides a stable surface for the system. The screed surrounds the heating pipes, improving thermal efficiency and performance. Choosing the right screed type and thickness is important for optimal results.

How quickly can screed be delivered?

L&S Concrete offers fast and reliable screed delivery, often with next-day or scheduled options depending on availability. Because the service operates locally across Hampshire and surrounding areas, it can respond quickly to project requirements. Timely delivery is important to ensure installation can be completed efficiently. Booking in advance is recommended for planned works.

Why choose L&S Concrete for floor screed?

L&S Concrete provides a high-quality, reliable floor screed service tailored to both domestic and commercial projects. With consistent ready mixed screed, experienced teams and the option for pumping, L&S ensures efficient installation and a high standard of finish. The ability to combine screed with other services such as concrete supply and pumping makes L&S a practical one-stop solution.
